Bioremediation Studies at Guadalupe Oil Production Fields
Conducted studies for optimal bioremediation and process monitoring. Funded by Unocal Corporation. Field and pilot studies included: (1) Microbial profiles and roles in phytoremediation; (b) Environmental restoration; (3) Validation and monitoring of natural attenuation processes; (4) Hydrocarbon biodegradability along vertical profiles during natural attenuation; (5) Land treatment unit design and process optimization; (6) Microbial community profiles and petroleum degradation rates in steam-treated soils; (7) Monitoring and methane generation and consumption rates in vadose zones.

Microbiological and chemical quality of water and foods
Certified Public Health Microbiologist. Conduct all aspects of water and wastewater monitoring for disease-causing and indicator microorganisms. Similarly evaluate milk, food, and dairy products for the presence of pathogens that may represent a health hazard. Evaluate potential sources or infectious microorganisms and develop plans for eradication of infectious agents and prevention of infections. Provide litigation and expert witness support. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)

Molecular methods for the detection of Listeria spp. Developed a PCR-based assay for the detection of Listeria in the milk production and milk product manufacturing facilities for quality control and forensics studies.

Quality Control of Powdered Milk. Conducted studies to identify and track the sources of endospores in powdered milk for the purpose of mitigation and improvement of milk quality.

Quality Assurance of raw milk: Identification of bacteria responsible for milk ropiness and the development of methods for the detection of spoilage bacteria in milk samples.  Develop and optimize methods for the evaluation of raw milk.
